Erdington Police Target Under-Age Drinkers

Local off licenses and High Street pubs have been cooperating with Erdington police to deter underage drinkers. This is one of a number of initiatives currently running as part of the Town Centre Partnership’s ‘cleaner, safer, greener, and more inviting’ policy.

Inspector Nick Rowe of the Erdington Police told us; ‘we are getting good help from local businesses to combat the under age drinkers. We are marking cans and bottles with UV pens, so if we seize alcohol on the street, we can find the source.

Also, with the help of licensees, we have been setting up metal detectors in Public Houses with the aim of preventing violent crime. So far we have used them in The Acorn and The Swan to very good effect.

High Street Drug Trawl. Police and PCSO’s are patrolling the High Street in large numbers, together with dogs who will sniff out anyone in contact with illegal substances.

Sergeant Mark Walters told us; ‘If the dog indicates that an individual has been in contact with drugs, it allows us to conduct a search. The operation has been extremely successful, with a number of arrests for possession and supply offences’
